Ways to Save in 2012!

It’s the New Year and it’s a New You! Setting New Years Resolutions? I have one friend who has set so many that I’m convinced I’m not even going to recognize her with all the new goals she has. Are you resolved to save money in 2012? Here are a few easy ways to save without setting yourself up for failure.

1. Commit to menu planning. Spend 20 minutes each week planning your menu. If you have a good idea of what you will be eating for the week, you will be less likely to order take out and you’ll be more likely to plan to eat what is on sale. Just grab the week’s circular, circle what looks good, pair your coupons and voila! This goal alone could save you hundreds per month.

2. Commit to clipping/printing coupons. Just using a few clipped coupons per month can save $20 per shopping trip. Be sure to print in black and white as well as normal setting. Order ink online to save on it as well.

3. Commit to one (or at most two, and only for fresh foods!) grocery trips per week and stick to your list of planned menu items. The less time you spend in the stores, the less likely you are to buy “extras” like that yummy bag of pita chips or that 12 pack of soda (AND IMAGINE THE CALORIES YOU’LL SAVE!) . Addicted to Costco or Sam’s Club? These places WILL save you money if you use self-control. Stick to your list and limit your visits to once per month.

4. Commit to shopping online for big purchases. Spending $100 or more? Go online first and do some research. I save $10-$20 every time I buy shoes at DSW online versus DSW in store. (Hint: shop through Ebates AND use the rewards programs as much as possible). We bought a TV online versus in store (Walmart). We were able to score free shipping and 6% cash back via Ebates! That covered the taxes. On big purchases this can be significant. Want to save more? Head to Kroger or any grocery that gives fuel points for gift cards. Buy your gift cards and use them like cash online.

5. Commit to avoiding “convenience” purchases. (ie. glasses at the eye doctor or pet medicine/food at the vet). Need glasses or contacts? Or what about pet supplies? Look for specialty sites like Coastalcontacts.com,Wag.com or 1800pedmeds.com. You can save large percentages over the retail prices. Also, remember to shop through Ebates and go to Retailmenot.com for more money saving codes.
