Happy Birthday to Us!

Well, one year ago today we brought into the world our baby- 4our2cents. And it has been amazing to see how much it has grown in a years time. Our first post was entitled "A New Adventure" and that it has been. But over the last few weeks we have been talking (and praying) about how this adventure will continue. We have dreams and goals for the site to take it to the next level. Thank you so much for your support and participation. We always welcome your thoughts, ideas and suggestions. You are the reason we share our 2 cents. And we can't wait to see where the journey leads next.

We were hoping to reach 500 Facebook fans by our b-day (almost there!) so we could do one big giveaway. Guess we will just have to do two! ;). Be watching tomorrow for a Birthday Bash Giveaway.

Physicians Formula Pulls Plug on $5 PDF Coupon

Look what I just found out on the Physicians Formula (PF) Facebook page:
Let me give you some background on this. A while back we told you about an amazing money maker on PF make-up at CVS.  This deal was possible by using said $5 coupon, ECBs and mail-in rebates.  The $5 was a PDF coupon that was made available to consumers after they entered a promotion that PF was running.  So here is what I think happened.  Too many overzealous couponers shared the PDF url to "help" each other score a deal.  However, PF's intention was that the coupon would be for those who entered the promotion (and would therefore have a little control over how many were issued.)  Or greedy (that's right, I said it!) couponers obtained the coupon via the promotion (or by just the url) and then printed 30 coupons and redeemed them all!  Either way, PF was not prepared with the financial ramifications of so many coupons being redeemed.

So what is the moral of this story: be careful with PDF coupons.  They are notorious for causing problems in the coupon world.  Make sure that they have come directly from a manufactures site and were obtained correctly.  We will do the same when we post about them here.

Is it crummy that PF had to pull the plug on the Q, yes. (I still have one to burn- I printed 2 of each.  Cannot be used now.)  But should we be surprised, no.  Once again as couponing becomes more popular, it will be up to us veterans to be beacons on ethical couponing!  Otherwise companies will start to think the headache outweighs the benefits of providing coupons to customers.

What are your thoughts on the newest drama in coupon world? :)  Weigh in here via comment box or on our Facebook wall.

CVS: Spend $30 on Participating Items, Get $10 Gas Card

WOW! With summer around the corner and gas prices reaching $4 per-gallon nationally, CVS announced yesterday that they are launching a new program designed to allow you to earn FREE gas all summer!  From 5/22 - 8/28, you can earn a $10 gift card to Exxon/Mobil, Shell, BP Amoco or BP Arco every week simply by spending $30 on specially-marked items in the weekly CVS/pharmacy ad (before coupons).

All qualifying products will be tagged with a "get free gas" icon in the weekly ad (see photo above) and eligible products will rotate each week.  Whenever you reach the $30 required purchase threshold (before coupons have been applied), a special coupon will print on your receipt that can be redeemed immediately in store for a $10 gas card. You can redeem one $10 gas card per week, which means you can potentially score $140 worth of FREE gas during the 14 week promotion!   More details here.

Santa Cruz Lemonade @ Whole Foods! 50cents in Cbus!

This deal is dependent upon location but I was just in the Dublin (Ohio) Whole Foods today and they had Santa Cruz Lemonade on sale for 4/$5! Use this coupon to get 75 cents off and that brings your total to 50 cents! Not bad for organic lemonade! (Some stores are even $1 per bottle. W/ Q = $.25)

Be sure to check with your store because it is ringing up at different prices.

Ways to Save: Discounted Produce, Meat and Breads

If you are a newbie couponer you might be starting to get the hang of saving your family money by matching sale prices and coupons.  This works great on prepackaged items especially.  But one area that can be hard to save on is fresh produce.  From time to time you can find store or manufactures coupons on brand name produce.  But that is not always the case.  Here is one way to look at it, if you save more on packaged items (cereal, pasta, can goods, dairy...) then the savings can cover your produce, meat and bakery purchases.  But once again, I remind you that saving money comes with making new habits.  One of those habits is looking for discounted produce, meat and bakery items.  I do not leave a store without looking at the "oops we baked too much" stand (perfect for finding french toast bread) or scanning the meat case for "manager special" tags.  Often baked goods, meat and produce get marked down for obvious reasons- they want to sell them quick before they go bad.  Don't let this scare you!  Take that steak (at 40% savings) home and cook it that night or freeze it right away.  Veggies are the same.  Even if you don't think you will use it that day or next, freeze it for later.

On Tuesday during my usual Marc's run, I headed for the discount shelf at the back of the produce department.  They had a ton of stuff this week!  Most times their discounted produce bags are usually marked $1 and will even include mixed items.  I got a head of broccoli and cauliflower=$1, a pineapple=$1 and 2 bags of carrots=$1.  But the piece de resistance= flowers!  I always love to "splurge" and buy myself marked down flowers.  But this was the best buy ever.  I got 3 dozen roses for $3!  And they are beautiful!  I turned those 3 dozen into 6 teacher gifts and even had a few left for myself!

What are your thoughts on shopping for discounted produce, meat and bread?

Tanga: Free Faux Pearl Set (pay $5.99 s/h)

Tanga has a this Faux Pearl Necklace and Earring Bundle for free today. All you pay is the $5.99 for shipping and handling. You can choose between Black, Pink, Purple, Silver and White!

Tanga is a daily deal site and they often have good magazine subscription deals too (not too familiar with it yet).  This is one of their "24 hour" deals.

Rue La La: Reebok Deals (Credit Expires Soon!)

If you got the $20 Rue La La Credit we told you about in April (no longer available), remember that is will expire in a week on the 25th.  You don't want to loose out on that $20!

Today they started a Reebok Boutique and have plenty of items starting at $25.90.  So after shipping and credit, that would be $15.85 for cute work out tanks and hoodies.  They also have the Easy Tone flip flops (psa $29.90) and athletic shoes (psa $49.90).

Do you "heart" Rue La La yet?

Target Clearance Steals: Money Maker Lysol No Touch Hand Soap + More

Whenever I find a great steal at a store, I am always so excited to get home to share it with you.   Target clearance once again has made my day.  I found a few items, that matched with coupons and rebates are steals!

First, hurry over to Target.com and print TQs for $2 of ANY women's shirt and $3 off any Mossimo apparel item.  I use these to score the Merona tank for 25 cents and the country chic Mossimo dress for $3.24

Merona Tank Original price: $9
75% off Clearance price= $2.25
-$2 women's shirt TQ
Final price= $0.25!

Mossimo Patchwork Dress Original price: $24.99
75% off Clearance price= $6.24
-$3 Mossimo TQ
Final price= $3.24!

Clearance shopping is something that has to become a habit.  I do not leave Target without walking down the clearance end caps.  Last week I happened to see the Lysol No Touch Soap Dispensers for around $8 for the value starter kit.  My hubby really likes this product so I almost bought it.  Glad I waited.  Last weekend there was a rebate form in the SmartSource insert and today the price was even lower! Also, I just found a $3 printable that turns it into a money maker! So...

Lysol No Touch Soap Dispenser Starter (with 2 soaps instead of just one!) Original price: $9.99
30% off Clearance price= $6.98
-$3 Lysol No Touch Starter Kit printable)
-$6.50 Lysol No Touch Starter Kit Rebate (SS, 5/15/11)
Final price= FREE + $2.52 money maker

I love the bargain high!  Do you have any steals you want to brag about?  Post them on our Facebook page.  Include pics too!
